Prepping the Cutter Posted on: 09-13-2004 @ 06:10 pm |

Over the weekend, I got on a couple of times. On Sunday night, I decided to take my cutter out for the first time in a while. It turned out to be quite a night.
I have several extra maps (doubles and triples of certain charts), that I could have transfered to the Cutter, but I decided to get them the hard way as I did with the Wrasse. I have never been given or even borrowed a map while on the Wrasse (except one time when I believe it was Sarah and I took another ship to rescue it when I left it at Monsoon). Half of the fun is winning or finding the maps. I did however purchase enough maps with the Cutter to allow me to sail in my home arch.
As a result, I was limited to travelling back and forth from Winter Solstice-Oyster and Alpha, then returning. Unlike other nights, I was positively flooded with applications from jobbers and at one time, I had a massive crew of six others - several of them Pirates or even officers from other crews.
The highlight of the night was being attacked by a another crew's ship. After a fairly even battle (I believe 1-1 in hits), we engaged in a classic sword fight. Having been advised by Rowdy a couple of nights earlier to take the bots first in such a battle, I bellowed the same advice to my crew as we entered the battle.
It was the first time I have come out ahead in a battle with real people and it was quite exciting. The crew followed the orders perfectly and we quickly eliminated a couple of bots before setting our sights on the crew. We still have five members in battle when the opposition went down to one member. I wish I could remember the Pirate's name because he put up a heck of a battle and surely fought off several big swords that came his way. In the end though we prevailed - Our take - 12 POE! Anyway, despite the small prize, it was a battle I won't soon forget.
Often times I have sailed with Rowdy and found him to be an exceptional teacher. My ratings in nearly every area are reaching a high level, but I still have a lot to learn and Rowdy is a great teacher. From his tips on sword fighting, to telling me the other night about buying and selling opals - a part of the game I had yet to discover, I always feel like I have learned a lot after a sail with Rowdy.
If any of the newer officers are reading my journal entry here - heed this advice - Take every opportunity to be aboard a ship with Rowdy. He is surely the top pirate in the game, let alone our crew and you are never good enough that you can't learn a little more..
